2009 Award for Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Keystone Innovation Grant Initiative - Finalist for the University Economic Development Association 2009 Awards of Excellence

SITE SELECTION magazine’s 2008 GOVERNOR’S CUP AWARDMarch 2009

·        4th Place out of all 50 states—This is Pennsylvania’s highest ranking since 1980 and the first time it has appeared in the TOP 10 since 2005

·        Pennsylvania ranked 4th out of 50 states in this year’s Competitiveness Awards, the commonwealth’s best ever placement since the inception of the Competitiveness Awards

·        Pennsylvania ranked 1st in US states to lead in private sector life science facility development, Conway Data New Plant Database

·        Pennsylvania ranked 3rd out of the 50 states for Top Shelf LEED projects

2009 CORPORATE INVESTMENT & COMMUNITY IMPACT (CiCi) AWARDS—March 2009:

·        Boston Beer/Samuel Adams—Fogelsville, Pennsylvania (Community Impact)

·        BAE Systems Land and Armaments LP—York, Pennsylvania (Community Impact)

AREA DEVELOPMENT 2008 Project of the Year—AMAZON.com: awarded in conjunction with the 2009 Silver Shovel Award, June/July 2009

AREA DEVELOPMENT has awarded Pennsylvania with a Silver Shovel for threeconsecutive years; 2009, 2008 and 2007 in the "Over 10 million Population" category.

·        2009 WEBBY AWARD was presented to Pennsylvania’s Tourism & Economic Development Web sites: visitPA.com & newPA.com by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, May 2009 (total entries exceeded 10,000 from over 60 nations).

·        The STATE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE (SSTI) ranked Pennsylvania 9th within the United States in newly released data (July 2009) entitled “R & D Performed by Industry within U.S., per State, 2003-2007”

·        PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT’S “THE PENNSYLVANIA INITIATIVE FOR NANOTECHNOLOGY (PIN)” was a finalist for the University Economic Development Association’s (UEDA) “Excellence in Public Policy Award” announced during their annual “Awards of Excellence” presentation---November 2008

·        Ben Franklin Technology Partners were awarded the International Economic Development Council's (IEDC) Technology Based Economic Development Award in October 2008.

·        Pennsylvania’s Keystone Innovation Zone program gained national recognition in January 2008 from the National Governors Association's Center for Best Practices. It also has gained recognition from the Pew Center on the States.

·        The project that won Business Facilities Magazine 2007 Economic Development Deal of the Year (EDDY) Gold Award was the Westinghouse Electric Company.  

·        In May 2006, the Pennsylvania Business Retention & Expansion Program received the Business Retention and Expansion International (BREI) 2006 Statewide/Provincewide Program.

·        Pennsylvania and its cities also have a diverse and well-educated workforce and economy, as evidenced by the rankings below:  

·        Pennsylvania is first in the nation for Steel Industry Cluster (Center for Industry Studies, 2008).

·        Pittsburgh ranks first among the Forecasted Business Rent Growth Market (CIRE Magazine, September 2008).

·        Pennsylvania is the nation's largest producer of hardwood lumber (Carlisle Sentinel, August 2008).

·         Pittsburgh is first in the nation when it comes to growth in venture capital investment (PriceWaterhouseCoopers National Venture Capital Association Money Tree Report, 2008)
