Why this Market?
Korea’s IT market is estimated at $310,941 million in 2009, while imports accounted for $62,000 million, mainly from the United States, Japan and other European countries.
There are a total of 17,688 IT companies in Korea including equipment manufacturing, services, software, and other computer related services.
Korea’s extensive fiber optic/wireless broadband internet has average of 20 Mbps – 7 times faster than the world’s average - covering essentially the entire country. This makes Korea one of the most attractive ‘test beds’ for new and emerging application and telecommunications services.
The government’s intensive investment into “Digital Convergence” through 10 Growth Engine Initiative is stimulating rapid development and market expansion of 3D/HD smart IPTV, 4G, BcN, RFID/USN, cloud computing, smart grid and enhanced digital content over next several years. This initiative raised strong demand for advanced handsets, network infrastructure, components, software applications and content, which creates more opportunities for US-based high technology companies.
In 2010, Pennsylvania’s export to Korea totaled $792.5 million. Computer and electronic products were the 3rd largest export accounting for 13.5% of the total exports.
Through the October 2011, exports of computer and electronics products to Korea have increased by 9.4%.
