PREP Region Profile

Business Demographics

The Lehigh Valley is the third-largest region in Pennsylvania behind Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and is one of the state’s fastest-growing regions. This growth can be attributed to the region’s close proximity to several major metropolitan markets (located within one day’s drive of 40% of the U.S. and one-half of Canadian consumers), an infrastructure base that allows for continued growth and development, tremendous natural and recreational resources that make for a high quality of life, and a broad and ever-expanding commercial and industrial base that offers a diversity of high-quality employment opportunities.

The area currently is adding various high-tech industries to its employment base — such as biotech, pharmaceutical and optoelectronic companies — to improve the economic diversity of the region and set the stage for long-term growth.
