University Builds Materials Nano-Bio Research Facility

The new 350,000-square-foot materials science building will serve as a central location for more than 125 students and faculty, facilitate collaboration between the school and local healthcare and materials science partners, enhance the school's research status in the materials science field, and create new jobs.

Problem

The current materials science and engineering laboratories, classrooms, and offices are housed in multiple buildings across Penn State's campus. The creation of a centrally located building with the needed technology and research upgrades would require a large investment.

Funding & Programs

Construction of this building was made possible with $190 million in investments, the single largest investment in the school's 150-year history. Funding includes $40 million from the Public Improvement Project fund, which is used to construct and renovate facilities on Pennsylvania's state-owned and assisted institutes of higher learning.

Resolution

The state's investment will allow for the construction of one of Penn State's largest academic buildings. Materials researchers from all over the university will be able to come together under one roof and benefit from access to new equipment, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a collaborative environment.

"This funding is an investment in the future of education and technology that will fuel cutting edge research, bring the promise of new jobs and further Pennsylvania's status as a global leader in the biosciences industry," Governor Rendell said at the $40 million dollar check presentation on May 18, 2005.
