Energy Technology
In a state with as much natural beauty as Pennsylvania, there’s good reason to appreciate the value of our resources. An emphasis on energy initiatives places us amongst the leaders in the country in sustainable and responsible economic development. It's clear that with a constant stream of new innovative programs designed to address today’s most important environmental issues, things are only going to get greener.
The state government is leading the way by utilizing alternative energy sources for nearly 30% of Pennsylvania’s usage. And, a commitment to education and business development is proving fertile ground for the growth of our energy technology industry.
With demand for renewable energy technology on the rise, Pennsylvania’s well-rounded approach seeks to leverage our manufacturing expertise, skilled labor force, and research institutions to bring us into the next era of energy production.
Why Pennsylvania?
A $650 million investment is accelerating the commonwealth's leadership by expanding our technology sector and strengthening our focus on alternative fuels, clean energy, and overall efficiency.
$335 million will be focused on investing in infrastructure, economic development projects, and early-stage activities that will create thousands of jobs in a growing industry,
The Commonwealth Financing Authority will provide loans and grants for:
- Energy conservation projects
- High performance and energy efficient building projects
- Geothermal and wind energy projects
- Alternative energy production projects involving solar technology
Wind Energy
PA is at the forefront of the country's wind energy industry. The state has already developed initiatives dedicated to building the success of renewable energy sources, and a commitment to wind energy has spurred the growth of "green" jobs in Pennsylvania.

PA Initiative for Energy and the Environment
The Pennsylvania Initiative for Energy and the Environment (PIEE) is designed to sustain and enhance linkages between industry, Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs), and government – to leverage research and technology solutions which address the challenges of energy independence and environmental impacts. The research base of Pennsylvania’s institutions of higher education coupled with the Commonwealth’s strong industry base and state support for applied translational research of energy and environment development provides a powerful advantage over other states in developing energy and environment-based industries.
